1999 Kargil War (Operation Vijay, Operation Safed Sagar & Operation Talwar)

Reference record of the 1999 high-altitude conflict in Kargil, Drass, Batalik, and Mushkoh — recapturing icy Himalayan peaks up to 18,000 feet.

Strategic Overview

Between May and 26 July 1999 (Kargil Vijay Diwas), the Indian Armed Forces executed a high-altitude campaign to evict intruders from fortified ridges across the Drass, Kaksar, Mushkoh, Batalik, and Chorbat La sectors along the Line of Control in Ladakh.

Tri-Service Coordination

  • Operation Vijay (Indian Army): Steep night assaults up near-vertical rock faces at 15,000–18,000 feet — including the recapture of Tololing, Point 5140, Point 4875, Tiger Hill, and Khalubar — supported by concentrated massed artillery fire.
  • Operation Safed Sagar (Indian Air Force): High-altitude precision strike, reconnaissance, and helicopter support operations in thin mountain air.
  • Operation Talwar (Indian Navy): Forward deployment of the Eastern and Western Fleets in the northern Arabian Sea, establishing strategic maritime deterrence.
