1962 India–China War & Himalayan Frontier Battles
Reference record of the 1962 Himalayan conflict across Ladakh and the Eastern Sector, including the legendary last-man-last-round stands at Rezang La and Walong.
Strategic Overview
Fought at extreme altitudes across the Western Sector (Ladakh) and the Eastern Sector (NEFA, now Arunachal Pradesh) in October–November 1962, the conflict became a watershed in Indian national security planning — catalysing mountain-warfare divisions, border road infrastructure, and expansion of India’s defence production base.
Iconic Stands of Fortitude
- Battle of Rezang La (18 November 1962, Ladakh): At over 16,000 feet in the Chushul sector, Charlie Company of 13 Kumaon, commanded by Major Shaitan Singh (PVC, posthumous), fought to the last man and last round in defence of the Chushul airfield.
- Defence of Galwan, Sirijap & Chushul (Western Sector): Tenacious defence of high-altitude posts in Ladakh supported by Indian Air Force transport operations into advanced landing grounds.
- Battle of Walong & Tawang Sector (Eastern Sector): Fierce resistance in the Lohit Valley and at Bum La (Subedar Joginder Singh, PVC, posthumous).
