1971 Liberation War & Tri-Service Victory

Reference study of the 13-day December 1971 war — a textbook tri-service campaign by the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force culminating in the liberation of Bangladesh.

Strategic Overview

The 1971 War (3–16 December 1971) remains one of modern military history’s fastest and most decisive tri-service campaigns. Over 13 days of synchronised land, sea, and air operations across the Eastern and Western theatres, the Indian Armed Forces and Mukti Bahini achieved the liberation of Bangladesh and the surrender of approximately 93,000 troops at Dhaka on 16 December 1971 (Vijay Diwas).

Land, Maritime & Air Highlights

  • Eastern Theatre Lightning Campaign: Rapid riverine bypass manoeuvres, heliborne Meghna river crossings, the Tangail airborne drop, and air supremacy by the IAF.
  • Naval Operations — Operation Trident & Operation Python (4 & 8 December 1971): Audacious missile-boat strikes on Karachi harbour (commemorated on 4 December as Navy Day) alongside carrier aviation operations by INS Vikrant in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Western Theatre Battles — Basantar, Longewala & Srinagar Air Defence: Heroic actions including the Battle of Basantar (2 Lt Arun Khetarpal, PVC, and Maj Hoshiar Singh, PVC), the defence of Srinagar airfield (Fg Offr Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, PVC), the Battle of Longewala in Rajasthan, and the sacrifice of Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla (MVC) aboard INS Khukri.
